In my previous post, I recommended Architecture Services Group (ASG) to be the central Architecture governing body. But with my recent EA consulting, I have realised that in mid-size commercial organisation it is practically not possible to have a group with all the four architects (Business, Information, Application and Infrastructure) in the same forum. I am thinking, may be it is a better idea to divide ASG into two separate groups – Technical Architecture Group (TAG) and Business Architecture Group (BAG).
One of the challenges is to get business and IT people in the same forum and try to find common communication frequency, especially from architecture perspective. So, I think it may be more practical if technology based architecture is discussed and managed by TAG and business related decisions can be made in BAG. Though, it is very important that Enterprise Architect should be the common participant in both the forums, after all he is the most important link between business and IT.
Food for thought – feel free to drop any comments if you have any experience in setting and running any such groups.
